Class Description: This course will fulfill one high school foreign language credit. We will start from the very beginning and add knowledge incrementally, utilizing games, videos, and quizzes to aid learning. By the end of this course, students will have knowledge of Deaf culture, ASL grammar, ASL vocabulary, and the ability to converse simply in ASL.
For 9th-12th grade (will consider mature 8th graders, with the understanding that this is a class for high school credit).
Curriculum: American Sign Language 1 for Grades 9-12.
Homework Requirements: 30 minutes per week; no written homework required
Duration: 28 weeks

Teacher Bio: Amanda Wares has been a homeschooling mom for over 18 years, and has graduated her 3 older kids from her homeschool. She has one son, Deacon, left at home. In her pre-homeschool life, Amanda was a sign language interpreter, graduating from UNCG with a degree in Deaf Education and sign language interpreting. She was a founding member of Friendly Educators, and taught ASL for a number of years. After a few year break, Amanda is excited to return to teaching!
