Class Description: This class is heavily lab oriented, with brief discussion of text concepts read and studied at home. Some written tests will be given in class, others may need to be administered at home, depending on time allowance due to labs for each module. Expectations for each module will be clearly outlined in the syllabus, which will be sent to parents/students prior to the first week of class.(From Apologia online textbook description) This college-prep biology course is designed to be the student's first high school science course, and provides students with a thorough understanding of the relevance of scientific inquiry. Textbook readings are backed by hands-on experiments that take students' book knowledge and bring it into real-world applications. After completing this course, students will be able to understand the vocabulary of biology and gain a strong understanding of the scientific method that will equip them to analyze data across other disciplines. Modules cover atoms, chemical structures, ecosystems, biomes, ecological communities, cell structure and function, cellular energy, DNA, proteins, cell cycles, and genetics (including inheritance, disorders, and technology). Students will also learn about prokaryotes, viruses, protists, fungi, and the fascinating worlds of plants and animals.

Homework Requirements: The expectation is that students come to class prepared for labs by completing assigned text reading, and note taking in the student workbook prior to class. This will require a minimum of 2 hours of study at home per week. The student will complete formal written laboratory reports on selected experiments.

Grading: Letter grades will be assigned based on test performance in class, labs will be pass/fail based on attendance and completion. Progress report will be given at midterm and final letter grade assigned at the end of course.

Teacher Bio: Meaghan is a Registered Nurse who has an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Central Texas College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Columbus State University. She worked as an Emergency and Trauma Nurse from 2009-2016 in Texas, Kentucky, and Georgia, while her husband served on active duty for the Army. She now homeschools her two daughters and moonlights as a camp nurse during the summer. Meaghan is a group leader with the middle school ministry at her church.
