Class Description: In this course we will explore the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. Students will discover these innovative periods in history where inventions and improvements fundamentally changed the tools of production, transportation, communication, and war. These swift changes led to spirited debate, including the value of people in an industrialized society and how best to govern them. Grand oratory proclamations occurred that resulted in beneficial responsive action in some cases but also disastrous consequences such as horrific warfare and human cruelty in others. These time periods saw new dictators rise to power. In some places, beneficial discourse was throttled by totalitarianism ideals or cultural leaders willing to disregard moral and religious boundaries. Longstanding mindsets and traditions on every continent were challenged. Mankind experienced both progress and regress as a result of these developments.
