Curriculum Needed: IEW’s The Elegant Essay, 3rd edition (please be mindful of the edition if purchasing a used copy) *and* Writing Research Papers: The Essential Tools, student books only ($29 each, available at iew.com)
Course Description: Using materials from the Institute for Excellence in Writing, your student will spend the fall semester delving into the details of the essay-writing process. From thesis statements to transitions, introductions, and conclusions, students will learn the building blocks of a well-crafted essay. In the spring semester, we will transition into writing effective and interesting research papers. Students will learn to develop a personalized note-taking system, create citations, address a topic in all its complexity, find credible sources, and incorporate a bit of style while arranging information in a logical way. *Note: This class assumes the student is already proficient in writing a basic paragraph. If you are unsure of this requirement, you must provide a writing sample prior to registration.
This class will be taught by Debbie Shilling, who holds a bachelor of science degree from Eastern Michigan University with concentrations in English Lit., Elementary Education and History. As a former missionary for 27 years, Debbie wrote numerous missionary letters, edited colleagues’ letters, and taught ELL and Elements of Writing at Black Forest Academy in Kandern, Germany. She also spent many years communicating in all formats in the business world. (30 weeks)
